Another HOW  "I" Do It -
Filling in a template using Digital Image Pro 10

First things first

I am not affilliated with pcCrafter.com. I create these mini-pictutorials
first for myself, and then make webpages of the process using the
screen print steps as I go along with the tasks.

Some images, and or graphics used are pcCrafter graphics that I own,
others are from other collections that I purchased and/or downloaded
for free from the internet.

This is a very basic How to. I chose just some of the
screen save images, that show the various important
steps of filling in a template with a background image
and/or a color, and placing a single graphic on top
of template. I did not add text, or do any fancy
formating, or tried to lighten the black lines
around the template, or anything beyond filling
and placing a graphic.

How I Do It

I open Digital Image Pro, and create a New Blank Workspace.
Next
I open the pcCrafter Deluxe Browser, where I keep the majority of graphics I use for making stuff, this includes not only the Creatables I purchase, download and install, but all the graphics I download from other artists, templates and or other images I gather.

Visit this page to see the pic-tutorial I made of How I Do that
http://marynpauln.com/savetemplates.html

Visit this page to find lots of online resources to find just about any template
you may want to work with for crafting
http://www.teas2dine4.com/4templatelinks.html

And from the HugBug Browser Deluxe, I drag selected images/graphics to the Files Tray in
Digital Image Pro. I do NOT put on workspace until I am ready to use.
If the images should open in the workspace, just keep clicking back to the
BLANK Workspace - It will be in your Files tray.

Some of the tools on the DIGITAL IMAGE PRO 10 toolbar
I  will be referring to and that I use during this process of working
on a template.

Screen saves images follow along showing the basics of
How I fill in a template

Next after I have assembled the images that I may want to use,
I can begin work on the template(s)
and drag the template from the files tray to the workspace

When I have the template on  the workspace,
I click on it and then, I choose the Magic Wand from the tool bar
and while holding down the Shift Key on my Key Board
I choose the various areas of the template, that I want
to fill in with the same pattern or background or color.
NOTE: if you choose Continuous from selection menu
of the Magic Wand, you do not need to hold down the shift key

As you click in each area, you should be seeing
dotted lines surround the area chosen, and they
will appear to be moving, this is also referred to
as Marching Ants.

After selecting the areas,  I Go to the Effects Menu, and
choose "Fill with Texture or Color"
I will be choosing a picture - and it is of a background
image that I brought over from the Deluxe Browser
to use as a background fill pattern

I will look through all the images I have gathered
in the Files tray, when I double click on the image
chosen I will be able to preview how it looks, if
I don't like it I can choose another background,
or cancel and go back and choose a Color, etc.

Now that I have certain areas of the template
filled in with one background, I go back to the
main workspace, and now I want to fill in other
areas of template, I create a new layer, by
Choosing from the Edit menu - Duplicate Whole Picture

The background fill areas are now secure, and I use
the Magic Wand tool, and hold down my Shift Key,
and select the other areas that I want to fill. This time
I will select to fill with a Color.

I continue to duplicate the image again, and select
with the Magic Wand, the remaining white areas
or template and fill with another pattern.

Adding a graphic to the template.

I will add a graphic of 3 flowers to the teapot template, I find
the graphic in the Files tray and drag to the template, resize
and position over image. It will have a white border around it.

I use the Magic Wand on the Flowers graphic, and
click in all the areas surrounding the Flowers, with
the wand, while holding down the Shift key, and
make sure the marching ants surround all the
white I want out.

Then, I select from the Edit Menu  >> Transparency and Even

Using the Adjust the Transparency tool, I slide
the button to 100, and you'll see the graphic
become transparent against the background
If there are still some areas of white, you can cancel
and go back to workspace and hold down shift key,
and select those areas with the magic wand

NOTE: Alternative or easier method to remove the
white from surrounding graphic -
Select all areas with the magic wand and simply press your DELETE KEY!!

The 3 flowers graphic is now transparent,
so to place it on the opposite side of template
so that both sides match, I click on the flower
graphic from the "stack" located on the
right hand side of screen, to select it.
Then from the Edit menu, I choose to Copy it,
then I choose to Paste It.

The Image will paste itself on top of the one
it copied, so I need to move it with the "select" tool
and move it over.

And to make it "mirror" the image
from the other side of template - I choose from the
"Format" menu in toolbar, to Flip the Selected object.

Crop the template on the workspace once it is done

Remember to save the completed template in a folder
or area you have set on your own computer for your
craft project images, and name it something you will
remember when trying to locate. You may also choose
to print out the image and test folding and seeing how
it looks all put together. Test on plain paper first, so
as not to waste Card Stock or other materials, until
you have the image just the way you want it.

Here is the completed  template image
Note: image size and quality has been
reduced for posting on a web page

NEXT:
I will show how I fill a template
and use the feature of the Deluxe Browser
of dragging the image or graphic while
HOLDING DOWN THE SHIFT KEY, and place
it in the Files tray. Doing this takes out "ALL"
the White around the Image and Also any
inside it. So I will need to choose images,
that DO NOT have alot of white inside the image itself.

I will use another template for this example
and place on workspace and fill selected areas
first with a background image, following the previous steps
of selecting areas with the Magic Wand while holding down
the Shift Key,  then Duplicating the image,
and selecting remaining areas, for each separate
FILL I want to make on the template itself.

As I drag the image of butterfly from the tray,
it is very large, and I will need to resize
and place over the template

I also chose another image from the tray that
I also made transparent, by holding down Shift
key while dragging from Deluxe Browser and placed
it in the files tray.

Some crafters also choose to create
white shapes and fill with the Color - White
and they place the white shapes Behind the
image, by using the Format menu, and choosing
Arrange, and choosing to Move the white filled shape
to Behind, so that it is the  layer behind the
graphics and the pattern layer, and it prevents
the patterned layer to show through.

I will save those steps for another - How I Do it.

For now:
I have shown how I fill in select areas of a
Template, using the Magic Wand
and
I have shown how I remove the white
around a graphic, by using the Magic Wand
and holding down your Shift Key and select
all the areas surrounding the image, till you see
marching ants animated in each area.
Then use the EFFECTS menu and choose
Transparency and Even.

And also mentioned the easier method of selecting the areas you want the white out, with the magic wand, and simply
pressing your Delete Key!
